Tips for Buying Business Envelopes

A direct mail advertisement has only a few seconds to capture the attention of its intended recipient and entice him or her into opening it and reading further. These four tips will help ensure you buy the best business envelopes for your advertising campaign.
Getting Recipients to Open Your Business Envelope
Most people look at the name of the sender on any direct mail marketing messages they receive before deciding to read it or throw it away. This information is usually found on the front of the envelope in the upper left corner. A colourful and enticing teaser message, strategically placed near where the recipient’s eyes will naturally scan to find the name and address of the sender, will help ensure your mailer is opened and the meat of your ad copy actually gets read.
The contrast of your teaser message against the background colour of the business envelope is also important. Dark text on a light background is standard for most direct mail advertisements. Text that is too similar to the background colour blends in and is less likely to attract the attention needed to rescue it from the garbage pile. Font style and size used in all parts of your ad copy, especially on the mailer itself, should be easy to read. No one is going to go hunt for their glasses just to see what is written on a piece of “junk mail”.
The verbiage used in your teaser is probably the most important part of your ad copy. Some words are more likely to provoke a response from recipients than others, getting them to at least open the mailer to learn about the details of the offer. Words and phrases that work will compel recipients to open the mailer, such as: “Claim your free item now.” Some hook their recipients with promises of prizes, free coupons or with other valuable items enclosed within the mailer. Personalizing the teaser text with the name of the recipient is an old marketing trick. Recipients expect to find their name or another generic greeting in the address portion of the mailer, but the mailer gains extra attention when the recipient’s name is included in the teaser copy.
Another tried and true technique for getting recipients to open direct mail advertisements is the old coin trick. Years ago marketers would use a clear window in their business envelopes that revealed a coin inside. The recipient would have to open the mailer to retrieve the coin. While coins are used less frequently today than they were a decade ago, the same principal still applies. Companies use these windows now to showcase anything from free address labels to car key blanks.
